Starting in August 1952, the Port acquired over 126 acres in the area between Jewett Creek and the Hood River Bridge (an area then known as "Bingen West"). The depression seen in the center-left portion of the photograph would become the location of the Port's first marina. The area was later dredged to a ten foot depth (at low water) and a boat ramp was constructed. The SDS Lumber mill appears in the background as does the Pacific Power and Light tranmission tower (seen faintly through the haze just above and to the left of the mound of dirt) that sits near the southwest corner of the Port's current Bingen Point Business Park (fka "Bingen East").
